The future of youth sports is here: Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance

Since I picked up writing last September, I’ve been blessed with many opportunities to connect with important people in the journalism and sports world. Social media and the internet allow for instantaneous communication between people from all walks of life. In March, Dr. Tommy John, son of retired MLB pitcher Tommy John, reached out to me and we chatted about his upcoming book. Most of you are likely familiar with the Tommy John name in relation to the baseball-related surgical procedure, but there’s plenty more to the story. Along with spreading his message to educate parents, coaches and players alike, Dr. John told me something extremely shocking: 57 percent of all Tommy John surgeries are performed on athletes between the ages of 15 and 19. Both John and his father have been actively speaking about the risks and benefits involved in youth sports today. Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance is the culmination of it all.

Some of the many topics Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance covers include:

  • Time management
  • Rehabilitation techniques
  • Main causes of injuries and how to prevent them
  • Knowing your own body
  • Home remedies for rehab
  • Pre-game warm up exercises
  • Water intake and sports drinks
  • Nutrition
  • Importance of sleep
  • Impact of technology on athletes
  • Innovative parenting techniques that go hand-in-hand with sports

The text’s full title is Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance: A Sports Parent’s Survival Guide. It is all about informing the parent, the athlete, the coach and the administrator. If everyone works together, Dr. John hopes that we can all work towards changing the future of youth sports for the better. It’s never too late to be educated and be excited for what’s ahead. I don’t want to give away too much about MIMP, but it is one of the most complete and informative books I’ve read. Every bit of research and thought that went into it had a purpose.

To the parent: This book will help you with many things. Not only will your child have an increased chance of being successful, but so will you. There aren’t many things better than watching your kid give it their all to a sport, recover fully, then get after it again the next day. You’ll develop a stronger relationship with your child. You’ll be more confident in your child. Your child will be more confident in you.

To the athlete: Do you want to perform better in your sport? Do you want to feel better about yourself? Any aspirations of going pro? Striving to live a healthier lifestyle? This book is for you. Although it’s a parent’s guide, everything inside this book is designed for your success. With your parent and a copy of Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance by your side, there is nothing you can’t accomplish in baseball, basketball, football or whatever sport/activity you wish to partake in.

To the coach: The hard part is done. You have your team. Everyone is all-in, personnel is set up, games are scheduled. The only thing you have left to do is prepare and play. This book will help you with both of those tasks. Both the mental and physical health of your players are your top priorities as a coach. Ensure that those are well-taken care of by ordering a copy.

To the administrator: You have more power than anyone listed above. If you’re a principal, superintendent or athletic director, you get to decide on the rules and how they are enforced. Using this newfound information, you can bring new ideas to the table at meetings and push for environments more conducive to the success of the youth athlete and his/her family. Putting Minimize Injury, Maximize Performance on your desk or bookshelf shows you care. What better way to put that into action than with proper research and expert advice.

I hope you are as excited as I am for the release of the book. So much great insight and information is about to be shared with the world. The Changing The Game Project has named MIMP one of its five most influential books for coaches, parents and kids this year. The Little League Organization will be publishing a Q+A with Dr. John in the near future, which will go out to all Little League coaches in the country. The National Federation of State High School Associations has also set up a series of articles to be written by Dr. John over the next year.

If you’re interested in pre-ordering a copy of Dr. John’s book, you can do so by clicking the end of this sentence. It will be officially released to the public on Tuesday, June 5. You can find him on Twitter @DrTommyJohnDC or email at info@drtommyjohn.com.
